Women’s World Cup: Football trailblazer Lily Parr to become first female honoured with statue
Women’s football trailblazer Lily Parr will be honoured with a statue ahead of England’s Lionesses‘ bid for World Cup glory.Almost 100 years have passed since the first women’s football match was played and the UK will now see the the first ever statue of a female footballer.GETTY2

St Helens-born Parr, who died in 1978, scored 986 goals in a career that began at the age of 14 for Dick, Kerr Ladies FC in 1920.In 2002, she became the first woman to be inducted into the English Football Hall of Fame at the National Football Museum where the statue – commissioned by FA sponsors Mars – will be unveiled next month in Manchester.
